The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 76 million, or 1 in 4 Americans are affected by foodborne illness each year. Most cases are mild, and healthy individuals will recover from their illnesses without serious repercussions. However, children, the elderly, and persons with compromised immune systems may suffer life-threatening illnesses from ingesting contaminated food. Food borne illness also has an impact on the economy due to loss in worker productivity and money spent on medical bills.

Food Protection continues to be one of the major functions of the Farmington Valley Health District. It is our mission to minimize the risk of foodborne disease through education and enforcement of the CT Public Health Code.

In FY 2006-2007, there were 545 annual permits issued, and 175 temporary permits issued.

Services provided by the FVHD Food Protection Program:

  • Provide food safety training
  • Review and approve plans for new establishments
  • Conduct foodborne illness outbreak investigations
  • Investigate complaints
  • License and inspect food booths at temporary events (i.e. fairs, carnivals)
